Artist statement.

“This series is the result of an exploration into the complex composition of an image. A digital photograph is comprised of pixels that appear as dots. Similarly, a painting is the sum of many brushstrokes. When I arrange my installations, I use common and literal objects, such as flowers and candy. Each individual flower or piece of candy, or other piece of material, is representative of a pixel or a brushstroke. It could be considered ‘painting with flowers’. The viewer can choose to either see the subject, such as a dot in this work (a highly divers symbol) , or the substance from which it is constructed, such as flowers. The artworks; A Brushstroke of White & A Brushstroke of Colour and White Pixels & Colour Pixels acknowledge the fundamental and essential building block elements of the image; the pixel and the brushstroke.”

porcelain goes supermarket

Porcelain powder paint mix and match for my next project in the Supermarket Heritage series…

Artist Statement: “With such a rich and long history, the symbolic meaning of porcelain is multi-dimensional. . It’s a story telling decorative household wares, a cross culture exchange and a trade commodity between countries, a hard yet fragile material, a symbol of wealth and luxury etc. We have come to associate these meanings with the colour combination and texture of the material. Applying this visual style to food products brings the traditional material into the context of a supermarket, marrying high culture with modern commercialism. A contradiction is created when a symbol of history from BC is applied to an object made for immediate consumption. I am intrigued by the global impact that this fine material has had. Originating in China, the material and technique has been altered by the different countries in which it is produced, resulting in diverse artistic symbols, themes and designs. Because of its longstanding history and cultural importance, we are able to recognise and associate its distinctive colour combination, no matter what object it is applied to, or what the decorative pattern portrays.”
