Artist Statement: “A futuristic flower bouquet, reminding us to never judge a book by it’s cover. The surprising sculptural arrangement presents a watermelon, re-imagined with floral flesh. Hovering between the familiar and the surreal, the red flowers and organic shapes abstractly mimic a watermelon’s red fruit pulp — poetically alluding to the power of colour recognition. This work is also a visual meditation on nature as it is represented in fine art. The subjects and symbolism of fruit and bouquet still life paintings were traditionally executed with highly refined techniques to appeal to a cultivated audience. In contrast, this arrangement re-contextualizes real flowers to subvert the traditional notions of the bouquet. The natural and organic look of the flowers is also contradicted by the very artificial situation in which they are placed.”
